Disc Problems

Spinal disc problems happen when the discs, the soft, cushion-like pads between the vertebrae, become damaged, worn, or shift out of place.

These discs play a vital role in keeping the spine flexible and absorbing daily stress, so when they’re not functioning properly, it can lead to discomfort, stiffness, or pain that sometimes radiates into the arms, legs, or other areas.

Many people develop disc issues due to aging, injury, or repetitive strain from everyday activities, and the effects can range from mild irritation to more persistent pain that impacts daily life.

The good news is that with the right care, it’s possible to manage symptoms, protect spinal health, and regain comfort and mobility.

Although the term “slipped disc” is commonly used, it isn’t medically accurate. Disc injuries instead fall into categories such as bulging, protruding, or herniated discs, and they can be very real sources of pain and dysfunction.

Spinal discs act as cushions between the vertebrae. Each disc contains a soft, gel-like center surrounded by strong outer fibers. When discs are healthy, they support smooth movement and allow the spine to bend, twist, and absorb shock.

Trauma or stress, such as improper lifting, slips and falls, or motor vehicle accidents—can disrupt the disc’s structure. When this happens, different types of disc problems may develop:

  • Herniated disc,  Occurs when the inner core breaks through the outer layer
  • Disc protrusion, The disc bulges outward, often irritating or pressing on nearby nerves
  • Disc prolapse, A more advanced condition where disc material shifts out of its normal position between the vertebrae

Disc issues can contribute to back pain, stiffness, nerve irritation, and symptoms that may travel into the arms or legs.

At Leitner Chiropractic and Massage Therapy, we focus on gentle, conservative care designed to support disc health, reduce nerve involvement, and improve spinal function—without masking symptoms.
