Headaches

Headaches can show up in many different ways—steady pressure, sharp or throbbing pain, soreness at the base of the skull, or even sudden discomfort after something cold. The location and intensity can vary from person to person and from day to day.

They are among the most common health complaints worldwide. While some headaches are mild and short-lived, others can be intense enough to disrupt work, school, sleep, and overall quality of life.

For those who experience headaches frequently, the ongoing pain may also take a toll emotionally, contributing to stress, anxiety, or low mood.

Understanding Headache Types

There are over 150 identified headache disorders, typically grouped into two broad categories.

Primary Headaches
These headaches occur on their own and are not caused by another medical condition. Common examples include:

  • Tension-type headaches
  • Migraines
  • Cluster headaches
  • New daily persistent headaches (NDPH)

Secondary Headaches
Secondary headaches develop as a result of another underlying issue, such as:

  • Head or neck trauma
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Infections
  • Overuse of medications
  • Sinus issues
  • Structural or neurological conditions

How Chiropractic Care May Help

Frequent headaches—whether tension-related, neck-based, or migraine-like—can interfere with work, sleep, and overall quality of life. If headaches keep coming back, there may be an underlying issue with posture, muscle tension, or spinal movement.

At Leitner Chiropractic and Massage Therapy, we focus on identifying contributing factors—especially in the neck and upper spine—and restoring healthy movement to help reduce headache frequency and intensity.
