Sciatica

Sciatica describes nerve-related pain that begins in the lower back and travels through the hip and down the leg. The discomfort may affect one or both sides of the body and often becomes more noticeable after prolonged sitting or standing.

Certain factors can increase the likelihood of sciatica, including pregnancy, diabetes, excess body weight, and conditions that place added stress on the lower spine.

Common Symptoms

People with sciatica may experience:

  • Pain in the hip or buttock region
  • Burning, tingling, or electric-like sensations traveling down the leg
  • Numbness, weakness, or difficulty moving the leg or foot
  • Ongoing pain primarily affecting one side
  • Sharp or shooting pain that makes standing, walking, or changing positions uncomfortable

Pain that travels from the low back into the hip, buttock, or leg can make everyday movement uncomfortable. Sciatica often worsens with sitting or standing for long periods and may interfere with work, sleep, and activity.

At Leitner Chiropractic and Massage Therapy, we focus on identifying what’s irritating the sciatic nerve and restoring healthy movement to the spine and surrounding tissues—without masking symptoms.
